What is As de Oros about?

As de Oros (2026) by Claus Bertermann is a large-format figurative painting — acrylic and oil stick on canvas, 150 × 200 cm, hand-painted, not AI-generated. The work presents a condition rather than a narrative: a young woman sits in a sunlit landscape of green hills, a blue mountain behind her, one hand resting lightly against her cheek, and looks straight at the viewer. Her title comes from the most famous card of the Spanish deck, the As de Oros, the ace of coins, on which a woman looks out in profile from a large golden coin. The twist of the picture: here she has stepped out of the coin and turned to face us, and the gold has come with her. It hangs in the trees around her as round, golden-orange fruits, ripening on the branches like coins, while red, yellow and red flow down from her dress like a ribbon in the colours of Spain. She no longer needs to be printed on the card; she is the ace, and the landscape is her suit. For this work, part of his 2026 figurative series, Claus Bertermann separates the two operations that make the picture. The ground is painted first, in coarse, broad brushstrokes that keep the movement of the arm visible: the pale blue sky, the green and turquoise hills, the deep blue mountain, the red dress and the broad red and yellow band at the lower right. The drawing comes afterwards and lies on top of that painted ground — the oil stick sets the woman's face and eyes, the wreath of green, yellow and orange in her hair, the hand at her cheek, the branches of the trees and the circles of the golden fruits. Unlike his abstract works, nothing here is scraped back — the image is built forward: coarse painted ground below, decisive drawn contour above. The composition is built around a single seated figure at the centre of the canvas, her head near the top edge, framed by a tree with golden fruits on the left and a second fruit tree on the right, with the hills and the blue mountain closing the horizon behind her. The palette sets red, orange and golden yellow against turquoise, green, violet and cobalt blue, a warm and sunny chord. The golden fruits are drawn in the same round, coin-like circles as the oros on the playing card. Anatomy and perspective are intentionally simplified and distorted, prioritising emotional weight over realism. All surface irregularities are intentional and integral to the artist's process. Signed by the artist on the front and back, As de Oros reflects Claus Bertermann's ongoing exploration of presence, joy and the human figure — a museum-scale portrait of a woman who holds the highest card of her suit.

Is As de Oros AI-generated?

No. As de Oros is a hand-painted original created entirely by Claus Bertermann — Acrylic and oil stick on canvas. All works by Claus Bertermann are made by hand. In a time when AI-generated imagery is increasingly common, every Bertermann painting is a unique physical object, never digitally produced.
