What is Pianissimo about?

Pianissimo (2026) by Claus Bertermann is a large-format figurative painting — acrylic and oil stick on canvas, 150 × 200 cm, hand-painted, not AI-generated. The work presents a condition rather than a narrative: a woman with short dark hair looks straight at the viewer, calm and upright, wearing rich jewellery — large flower earrings, an orange collar and a dark jacket embroidered with blossoms. Beside her, written by hand in red oil stick on the green background, is the sentence "En un mundo que grita, la calma es corona" — in a world that shouts, calm is a crown. The twist of the picture: on the left the world is loud, broad strokes rush past her like a gust of wind and sweep a golden glow around her head like a halo set in motion, even pulling her mouth sideways, yet she stays still. In music, pianissimo means very softly; the painting is a tribute to the quiet strength of women, and no crown is painted, because she already wears it. For this work, part of his 2026 figurative series, Claus Bertermann separates the two operations that make the picture. The ground is painted first, in coarse, broad brushstrokes that keep the movement of the arm visible: the deep blue field and the sweeping ochre and light blue strokes on the left, the green on the right, the planes of blue and mint green in the face and the orange of the collar and shoulders. The drawing comes afterwards and lies on top of that painted ground — the oil stick sets the eyes and brows, the dark hair, the red lines across the cheek, the flower earrings, the embroidered blossoms and the handwritten Spanish sentence. Unlike his abstract works, nothing here is scraped back — the image is built forward: coarse painted ground below, decisive drawn contour above. The composition is a close, frontal portrait: the head fills the centre of the canvas, the shoulders run along the lower edge, the moving blue and ochre field opens on the left and the calm green field with the sentence closes the right side. The palette sets deep blue, mint green and emerald against orange, red and golden ochre. One half of the face is painted in deep blue, the other in light mint green. Anatomy and perspective are intentionally simplified and distorted, prioritising emotional weight over realism. All surface irregularities are intentional and integral to the artist's process. Signed by the artist on the front and back, Pianissimo reflects Claus Bertermann's ongoing exploration of strength, calm and the human figure — a museum-scale portrait that honours the quiet confidence of women.

Is Pianissimo AI-generated?

No. Pianissimo is a hand-painted original created entirely by Claus Bertermann — Acrylic and oil stick on canvas. All works by Claus Bertermann are made by hand. In a time when AI-generated imagery is increasingly common, every Bertermann painting is a unique physical object, never digitally produced.
