What is Pit Stop about?

Pit Stop (2026) by Claus Bertermann is a large-format figurative painting — acrylic and oil stick on canvas, 150 × 200 cm, hand-painted, not AI-generated. The work presents a condition rather than a narrative: in the middle of a race, a mechanic in blue overalls leans over the racing car to find a fault, one hand braced on the wing, the other holding his head. Every second in the pits costs places on the track; he has to act quickly and get it right the first time. The twist of the picture: Bertermann has given him the most famous thinking pose in art, the pose of Rodin's The Thinker — only this thinker has no time to sit on a rock. He thinks standing up, with the clock running, because in the pit lane the right idea is the fastest tool. For this work, part of his 2026 figurative series and of his motor-racing cycle, Claus Bertermann separates the two operations that make the picture. The ground is painted first, in coarse, broad brushstrokes that keep the movement of the arm visible: the light, sunny sky, the orange-red car in the background, the blue and turquoise body of the car in the foreground, the deep blue of the overalls and the dark green ground. The drawing comes afterwards and lies on top of that painted ground — the oil stick sets the mechanic's face in turquoise and green, the hand at his temple and the hand braced on the wing, the folds of the overalls, the large wheel drawn in spinning circles around a bright green hub, the headlight and the yellow shoes. Unlike his abstract works, nothing here is scraped back — the image is built forward: coarse painted ground below, decisive drawn contour above. The composition is built on a strong diagonal: the mechanic bends forward from the upper centre towards the right, his head and both hands gathered in the upper half of the canvas, while the car and its large orange-red wheel fill the lower left. The palette sets cobalt, ultramarine and turquoise against orange, vermilion and yellow-green, under a light sky. Anatomy and perspective are intentionally simplified and distorted, prioritising emotional weight over realism. All surface irregularities are intentional and integral to the artist's process. Signed by the artist on the front and back, Pit Stop reflects Claus Bertermann's ongoing exploration of courage, focus and the human figure — a museum-scale portrait of concentration under pressure.

Is Pit Stop AI-generated?

No. Pit Stop is a hand-painted original created entirely by Claus Bertermann — Acrylic and oil stick on canvas. All works by Claus Bertermann are made by hand. In a time when AI-generated imagery is increasingly common, every Bertermann painting is a unique physical object, never digitally produced.
