What is Stranded on Track about?

Stranded on Track (2026) by Claus Bertermann is a large-format figurative painting — acrylic and oil stick on canvas, 150 × 200 cm, hand-painted, not AI-generated. The work presents a condition rather than a narrative: the car has stopped at the side of the track, and we do not know why — engine failure, or a collision with a rival. The driver sits on the sill of his car, goggles pushed up on his leather helmet, and looks back down the track with a piercing gaze. He knows exactly what happened, and he has already decided what to do about it. The twist of the picture: in the 1960s a stranded driver often had to wait at the trackside until the race was over. Every other driver saw that stretch of track for a few seconds; he had a whole race to study it. Bertermann paints him as the best-informed man on the circuit. For this work, part of his 2026 figurative series and of his motor-racing cycle, Claus Bertermann separates the two operations that make the picture. The ground is painted first, in coarse, broad brushstrokes that keep the movement of the arm visible: the dark sky, the band of green grass, the black body of the car, the blue of the jacket and the pale blue and pink wheels. The drawing comes afterwards and lies on top of that painted ground — the oil stick sets the leather helmet and the goggles on his forehead, the green face with its red lips and determined eyes, the orange gloves, the dense orange, red and yellow lines over the car and the outlines of both wheels. Unlike his abstract works, nothing here is scraped back — the image is built forward: coarse painted ground below, decisive drawn contour above. The composition is symmetrical and calm: the driver sits at the centre of the canvas, his head near the top edge, while the low black car stretches behind him across the full width, a pale blue wheel at the left and a pink wheel at the right. A horizontal band of green grass and a dark sky close the background. The palette sets cobalt and blue against orange, red and yellow, with green and pink accents. Anatomy and perspective are intentionally simplified and distorted, prioritising emotional weight over realism. All surface irregularities are intentional and integral to the artist's process. Signed by the artist on the front and back, Stranded on Track reflects Claus Bertermann's ongoing exploration of courage, focus and the human figure — a museum-scale portrait of determination.

Is Stranded on Track AI-generated?

No. Stranded on Track is a hand-painted original created entirely by Claus Bertermann — Acrylic and oil stick on canvas. All works by Claus Bertermann are made by hand. In a time when AI-generated imagery is increasingly common, every Bertermann painting is a unique physical object, never digitally produced.
