What is Twin Palms about?

Twin Palms (2026) by Claus Bertermann is a large-format figurative painting — acrylic and oil stick on canvas, 150 × 200 cm, hand-painted, not AI-generated. The work presents a condition rather than a narrative: two young women sit side by side on the yellow edge of an oval pool, barefoot, and look straight at the viewer. One has crossed her arms and her legs, the other rests her hands on her knee. They share the same blue hair, the same dark eyes and almost the same face — only their poses tell them apart. Around them lies a small private paradise: a pink terrace, palm trees, a white house with a red roof and a cluster of blossoms. Next to them stands a striped garden chair, still free. The title refers to Twin Palms, the mid-century house in Palm Springs designed by E. Stewart Williams in 1947 for Frank Sinatra and famous for its pool and its parties. Here the party is reduced to its essence: two friends, the water and the afternoon sun — the two women themselves are the twin palms of the title, side by side and completely at ease. For this work, part of his 2026 figurative series, Claus Bertermann separates the two operations that make the picture. The ground is painted first, in coarse, broad brushstrokes that keep the movement of the arm visible: the deep ultramarine pool, the pink terrace, the yellow pool edge, the green lawn, the palms, the house and the blossoms. The drawing comes afterwards and lies on top of that painted ground — the oil stick sets the blue contours of the two figures, their eyes and mouths, the fine lines of the crossed arms and folded hands, the toes, and the whole striped chair, drawn almost entirely in red. The drawn line keeps its independence from the field beneath it. Unlike his abstract works, nothing here is scraped back — the image is built forward: coarse painted ground below, decisive drawn contour above. The composition is horizontal and calm: the two figures sit slightly left of centre, set against the large oval of the pool, while the red-drawn chair balances them on the right. The palette is a mid-century postcard pushed to full saturation — ultramarine and cobalt water, bubblegum pink, lemon yellow, emerald and grass green, a white house under a cadmium-red roof. The woman on the left wears a strapless dress in a burst of red, yellow and blue flowers; the woman on the right a bright orange dress. Their skin is painted in pale yellow with blue and turquoise shadows. Anatomy and perspective are intentionally simplified and distorted, prioritising emotional presence over realism. All surface irregularities are intentional and integral to the artist's process. Signed in blue at the lower right and on the back, Twin Palms reflects Claus Bertermann's ongoing exploration of presence and companionship — a museum-scale painting of two friends at a pool, with one chair left free for the viewer.

Is Twin Palms AI-generated?

No. Twin Palms is a hand-painted original created entirely by Claus Bertermann — Acrylic and oil stick on canvas. All works by Claus Bertermann are made by hand. In a time when AI-generated imagery is increasingly common, every Bertermann painting is a unique physical object, never digitally produced.
