What is Windspiel about?

Windspiel (2026) by Claus Bertermann is a large-format figurative painting — acrylic and oil stick on canvas, 150 × 200 cm, hand-painted, not AI-generated. The work presents a condition rather than a narrative: a woman in a wide vermilion coat sits frontally in a lime-green armchair and looks straight out of the picture. The title is a small game with the viewer. In German, "Windspiel" is the old name for a small greyhound, the court dog of European portraiture — so the title promises a dog, yet the eye finds only the woman, the wind-blown ribbons and the yellow streaks at first. Only on a second or third look does the greyhound appear, sitting upright in front of her coat at the left of centre, looking straight out of the picture. The painting is named after its least visible figure, and the irony is exact: the greyhound is a sighthound, bred to see first, and here it is the one that is seen last. For this work, part of his 2026 figurative series, Claus Bertermann separates the two operations that make the picture. The ground is painted first, in coarse, broad brushstrokes that keep the movement of the arm visible: the yellow and cream field, the vermilion and orange coat, the lime-green back of the chair and the violet, turquoise and green masses in the lower half. The drawing comes afterwards and lies on top of that painted ground — the oil stick sets the woman's face, blue eyes, red lips and dark blue-black hair, the looping blue and green lines of the armchair, the ribbons, and the head of the greyhound with its long narrow muzzle, dark eyes and blue ears folded back. The drawn line does not conform to the field beneath it; it cuts across it and keeps its independence. Unlike his abstract works, nothing here is scraped back — the image is built forward: coarse painted ground below, decisive drawn contour above. The composition is centred on the seated woman, whose coat fills most of the middle of the canvas; the lime-green chair back frames her head and shoulders, and its arms sweep down to both lower corners in broad blue lines. The greyhound's orange head sits in front of the coat, flanked by a round ochre, teal and blue form at the end of the left armrest and a rounded green and turquoise mass at the right. The background is a bright yellow and cream field with pale turquoise at the upper edge; pink, red and violet ribbons hang at the upper right, and a long pink stroke crosses the top of the canvas. Anatomy and perspective are intentionally simplified and distorted, prioritising emotional weight over realism. All surface irregularities are intentional and integral to the artist's process. Signed by the artist on the front and back, Windspiel reflects Claus Bertermann's ongoing exploration of perception, companionship and the human figure — a museum-scale double portrait in which the sitter takes the room and the dog takes the title.

Is Windspiel AI-generated?

No. Windspiel is a hand-painted original created entirely by Claus Bertermann — Acrylic and oil stick on canvas. All works by Claus Bertermann are made by hand. In a time when AI-generated imagery is increasingly common, every Bertermann painting is a unique physical object, never digitally produced.
